Teak History

The History of Teak

Teak is a tropical hardwood tree, native to southeast Asia. It has been an incredibly
popular timber for many years, used in the construction of ships, houses, furniture
and flooring. Its unique natural oils make it extremely longlasting, even when exposed

to extreme weather elements. A testament to this is the fact that teak decking used in
ships has been recycled and remade into outdoor furniture. The "oiliness" of the wood
acts as a natural protectant not only against water but also against rot and termites

Teak is used in contemporary outdoor and indoor furniture settings. Its has a two fold
attraction in both its durability and its decorative value. Treated or untreated, teak ages
beautifully and retains its elegance over many years. To this day teak is the chosen wood
for the construction of expensive boats and yachts as well as in parks and ski-resorts.

The popularity and demand for teak has raised concerns about over-consumption and
deforestation in the past, however new regulations have ensured that teak usage has
been monitored and sustainable growth is now in place.
